Balancing the Weight of the World

Do you feel physical pain when you hear about the destruction of our planet? I found myself close to tears a lot this week, without an obvious reason. Does this happen to you?

With the recent fires in the Amazon and Australia, I have become aware that I feel physical pain when our earth is hurting. For me, it is a deep ache or heaviness in the bottom of my heart and a constant dull roar in my head. Does anyone else feel like this? I find it impossible to watch the news and incredibly painful to see the pictures on social media. Orphaned baby koalas, destroyed forests, strange weather patterns. Not to mention endless fear/negativity/violence. These things penetrate my heart, creating a black hole vortex experience in which I lose the ability to function emotionally. What is witnessed about these events feels too vast for me to fully comprehend. I oftentimes feel completely overwhelmed, frustrated and helpless, knowing that it doesn't have to be like this. There has to be a better way.

One of my most vivid memories from elementary school was an assembly that was held to discuss the destruction of the rain forest. I remember feeling dizzy, panicked, enraged and absolutely sick to my stomach. I still feel this way.

I can't singlehandedly save every tree or stop poachers from killing wild animals, while simultaneously creating a new way to recycle plastic (People ARE on it though! Good things are happening), I can tune in to a higher frequency and create harmony and peace within my being and own small neck of the woods.

My top three ways to stay functioning when feeling the weight of the world:

1. SHINE Shine your beautiful light as brightly as possible. Find what lights you up, makes you thrilled to be alive and do more of that. The earth needs our bright lights to radiate happiness, peace and love. We lift one another up by doing what we love and being our unique selves. If you are afraid to share your gifts, I encourage you to dig in and find the reason why- and conquer it. The earth needs you. What sets your spirit free?

2. Spend time in nature. As much as possible. I eat my breakfast outside (weather-permitting), meditate and do yoga on the porch, love my animals, teach my children about the natural world, sleep with my windows open year-round, celebrate all creatures, drink in the stars at night, take pictures of the moon, trees and mountains, as you might have noticed....

3. Balance Your Body Have you ever taken an Ayurvedic Dosha quiz? What type are you? Vatas, Pittas and Kaphas all require different elements in their nourishment, routine and lifestyle in order to stay balanced and high functioning. Simple changes can make an enormous difference in your health. Since incorporating easy routines in my life and shifting the way and the types of foods that I eat, I have been able to create more balance in my body. For me, this feels like less stomachaches/headaches/body tension. And more peace, patience, and resilience in my ability to navigate stressful situations (one being the state of the world). Ayurveda is AWESOME and powerful!!!

Sensitive human, you are not alone. It's an overwhelming time to be alive, especially as an empath.

What things do you do that help you stay positive (or at least functioning) when you're feeling the weight of the world?
